There are several events planned for the Allegheny Highlands Trail in the upcoming months.  We encourage use of the trail and all outings that are geared for safety, public involvement, fun, and courteous use of the trail.  Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for all events.  Helmets are required for all participants on bike rides.  Anyone wishing to use the trail for a public event should contact HTF for more details.

Allegheny Highlands Trail Conducts Blackwater Canyon Bike Ride  -

Saturday, September 25, 2010

The Highlands Trail Foundation will host their annual guided bike ride in the Blackwater Canyon on Saturday, September 25, 2010.  The ride will begin in Thomas and end at the Allegheny Highlands Trail station in Bretz, just outside Parsons.

HTF volunteers will transport shuttle drivers to Thomas from Bretz, but space constraints will not permit transport of bicycles or passengers. Shuttle drivers will meet at noon at the Bretz trailhead.

Riders will depart from Purple Fiddle in Thomas at 1:00pm. Participants will not only enjoy the beauty of the canyon and the Allegheny Highlands Trail, but will also learn about railroad history and future plans for AHT development.  All downhill, the 12.5-mile ride will take approximately three hours including rest stops and exploration of historic sites.

Trail riders in previous events have stopped at a number of scenic locations during the trip:

The ride is appropriate for all skill levels, but generally not recommended for children under 10. A parent or guardian must accompany children under 18. Helmets are required for all participants, who should carry plenty of water and dress for the weather. Mountain bikes or other fat tire bicycles are recommended for the packed dirt and gravel trail surface, but hybrid or cross bikes are also suitable.

For more information on the ride, contact HTF by email at info@highlandstrail.org or by phone at 304-637-7505.

The annual Blackwater Canyon Ride is one of the many outdoors events during the Leaf Peepers Festival, visit www.canaanvalley.org or call 800-782 2775 toll-free.
